WikimoonPersonality:At first glance, Makoto Kino is a striking, even intimidating young woman. At 5’6” she’s very tall for a Japanese woman, let alone one still growing when we first meet her, easily towering over most of her female peers and even some of her male teachers. Combined with her school uniform’s long skirt, her wavy auburn hair, and her skills in fighting, she’s easily mistaken for a female delinquent. When she first transfers to Usagi's school, rumors fly about that she was expelled from her previous school for fighting. And she
is very strong and aggressive at times, easily able to lift people over her shoulder and not hesitating at all to get physical with bullies or even strange monsters to protect herself and especially others. She can also be quick to anger if you hurt someone she considers close, or her precious plants, or even if she thinks you're thinking about it.
Once you look past the tough girl exterior, though, Makoto is actually an incredibly warm, friendly, cheerful girl. She's quick to share her delicious, homemade lunch with then-stranger Usagi (after saving the odango-head earlier that day from getting run over), easy to smile and laugh (even throw around the occasional pun), eager to listen and offer advice for any problem the girls face, and always looking for an excuse to treat her friends to a birthday cake or study party snacks. She's also a romantic at heart, carrying memories of her first crush deep within her heart (the initial heartbreak even being the actual reason she transferred away from her old school), having a strong interest in the love lives of her friends and looking for one of her own, and her dream of a perfect civilian future features a loving husband who enjoys her cooking. She might be a bit daydreamy or unintentionally blunt at times, but she's an incredibly sincere and devoted friend whether you've just met or have been friends for years.
The love she has for others shines brightest when they're in trouble. As Makoto or as Sailor Jupiter she's brave to the point of recklessness, quick to leap into the fray to protect the people around her, whether it's scooping someone up to save them from an oncoming car, stabbing an evil plant with a knife, or yanking a heavy, toxic sword out of someone's hands in order to cut them free of restraints. Whenever the enemy appears, she'll usually be the first to rush in and attack, either physically or with her powers over wood and lightning. Even if it costs her her life again and again, her truest desire is to protect the ones she cares about, especially her princess; this has been true since her first life as the Princess of Jupiter and is no less true now.
Her caring and protective nature doesn't just stem from her past as the Guardian of Jupiter, though. Both of Makoto's parents were killed in a plane crash some time before the series began, and she never mentions any other relatives. Since she states she's lived on her own since their deaths- at least since her middle school years and possibly a good while before that- it's likely she doesn't have
any living family at all. Combined with her tough reputation making most of her peers too intimidated to approach her, her previous heartbreak, and a sense of longing brought on by Jupiter unconsciously searching for her princess and fellow Senshi, Makoto had lived a self-sufficient but lonely life until meeting Usagi and the other girls, longing for friends and family of her own to care for and to receive that care back. Even now this manifests not just in the positive traits listed above, but also in a few of her weaknesses. At times Makoto's warm, welcoming nature can make her too trusting of strangers when enemies are on the rise, which has led her to either be trapped, captured, or temporarily brainwashed on more than one occasion. She's also guilty of doting on her friends to the point of distracting herself from other tasks: focusing more on setting up study parties and snacks than on her actual studies, and one time insisting on throwing a birthday celebration for Rei
in the middle of a recon mission. Luckily she has the other girls and her own self-motivation to help her stay on track most of the time.
One of her biggest weaknesses, though, is a very strong desire for domestic bliss: a dream of running a flower shop/bakery while married and raising a family of her own. While no one in the series, not even princess Usagi or leader Minako, asks the girls to sacrifice their dreams for the sake of their mission, Makoto still feels the conflicting pull between her destiny as a Sailor and her wish for a normal life a bit more keenly than the others. More than once she's asked herself whether she can really entertain the idea of a romance, a career as an entrepreneur, or even just day-to-day indulgences in enjoying life when she needs to dedicate her time and focus to keeping the world safe, whether she can pursue either dream to the fullest this way. This conflict is strong enough that Hawk's Eye of the Black Moon Circus is able to prey on it, making Makoto doubt her dedication to her path as a Sailor Senshi and nearly sucking her energy dry. She only breaks free of the trap after her conscience literally smacks some sense into her and reminds her WHY she fights: the promise she made to keep the people she loves safe. Who's going to protect them if Butt Kickin' Jupiter isn't there to stand by their side?
The incident not only allows her to unlock her powers as Super Sailor Jupiter and defeat Hawk's Eye, but also gives Makoto a much stronger dedication to achieving all of her goals. She joins the high school gardening and cooking clubs when before she'd declared she was going to just join the cooking club, and seems more confident both in her studies (a big change considering high school entrance exams gave the Soldier of Courage a major case of anxiety) and in her ability to multitask in general. Thanks to her dream of keeping her loved ones safe and happy, the one that guides her heart no matter which life number she's on, what form she takes, or what powers she wields, the strengths and devotion that make Makoto a powerful Sailor are focused and sharpened further with a renewed tenacity and an even stronger drive to succeed than before.
Abilities: Even without transforming, Makoto still has access to several lesser abilities, most notably her fast reflexes and superior physical strength; combined with her straightforward, offensive fighting style and protective instincts, she's a fierce opponent even before she calls upon her guardian planet. This does have limitations, however: an opponent with greater strength, agility, or especially a more cunning-based style of fighting would be able to overpower her. Also of note, while other adaptations such as the 90s anime portray Makoto as a skilled practitioner of multiple martial arts, it's not actually stated whether her manga self has any such training. Since she was quickly and easily beaten by a judoka (Haruka Tenou) in a practice spar Makoto bluffed her way into, this could mean her fighting style in the manga comes more from instinct and self-taught experience (and possibly some unconscious memories from her past life) than from formal teaching. (Or it could just be Haruka's habit of excelling at all the things ever, but who knows how to factor THAT in.)
Other minor abilities include passively generating an above-human electric charge which intensifies when ill (to the point where someone touching her receives a very strong static shock) and the ability to feel changes in weather and the electrical charge of the air, specifically those caused by enemies or carrying a general omen of misfortune. More ordinary but noteworthy skills include cooking, baking, gardening, housework, and general athleticism.
When she calls on her powers and transforms into Sailor Jupiter, she has access to the usual superhuman abilities granted to the other Sailor Senshi by their Sailor Crystals: an increase in her physical abilities such as strength and reflexes, increased resistance to physical and magical attacks and accelerated healing from them, survival in extreme conditions, and a glamour to protect her dual identity from enemies and civilians. Flight and teleportation are also powers in her arsenal, but will be capped to meet previously-set limits of 100 feet from the island's edge and slightly above the highest building, and teleportation will only be possible in the presence of the other three Inner Senshi. As guardian and heir to the planet Jupiter, Sailor Jupiter is granted control over lightning and plants, with her tiara uniquely featuring a lightning-rod antenna that allows her to call down and then direct lightning strikes. At the canon-point chosen, Eternal Sailor Jupiter has access to her strongest abilities.
